Ray Herrera passed on February 11, 2019. This was a very sad day for me.

Our story starts around 1956 when we were in 3rd grade together at John Muir School on Soto Rd in Hayward. We became good friends in the 5th or 6th grade.

Next on to Winton Jr High School... I would walk from my house on Sycamore Ave to Ray's house on Jackson St and we would walk to school together. I got to know his family and that is when I was introduced to "Junie" as his family called him because his Dad was Ray Sr.

Our Freshman & Sophomore years attending Sunset High we walked together as well.  Through our teen years our friendship continued and no matter what I needed help with Junie was always there to lend a hand as good friends do.

Our Junior & Senior years is when our circle of friends expanded.  There were the kids on Alves St, Paul Swigard, Roger Donais, Carol Donais, Patti & Candy Cante, Diana Lee and on Sycamore Ave there was myself, Bill Pena, my cousin Joe Silva and then Junie on Jackson St.  Most of us had cars so naturally the "guys" would pile into one car on a Friday night and cruise the strip.

After graduation we stayed in touch and even though it was not as often as when we were kids,  I knew that if I ever needed help Junie would always be there if he could.

As we get older we forget a lot of things along the way, but I will never forget the lifelong friendship that we have... even though he is not with us in body he will always be with us in spirit
