Gary Voorhies was killed in a hit and run accident on the Nimitz freeway between Oakland and Hayward in 1973. His car had broken down, and he was walking on the shoulder of the freeway, when a drunk driver hit him, and did not stop.
Gary had been drafted into the Army around 1967, and he served as a Sergeant in Viet Nam, where he was involved in heavy combat, and greatly respected for his leadership. After he returned from the Army, he enrolled as a student in the Engineering Department at UC Berkeley. He was within one quarter of obtaining his degree when he was killed. He had grown to become a very handsome young man who had Robert Redford style good looks. Gary was a gifted and graceful athlete, and a good guitar player. The world was not lucky enough to receive the full measure of his talents, and he left us far too soon.
